The Dependency Issue

A Rising Problem
Supposedly the economy has been improving since Obama took office, according to Obama anyway. The jobs picture is getting rosy, again according to Obama. May I make a suggestion if that is so? Good! I didn't think you'd mind. If the employment market is so good, rather than the BLS removing 1.2 million unemployed or under-employed workers from the rolls to smoke and mirrors the numbers, it may be high time to cut back the time that a citizen can remain on unemployment from 99 weeks. That's two years of government dependency alone. If the economy is doing so well, why are gas prices at an all time high and food prices steadily going up? Of course food prices go up when fuel prices sky rocket too. But remember that the government has removed those two items from the inflation index. More smoke and mirrors to give us a warm fuzzy.
Here! Have One, Compliments Of Me
Both political parties share the blame for this mess that they have created. We've allowed them to steal from us and pick our pockets for too long now. But I'd like to thank Obama for the upsurge in dependency of the people on the federal government's largess, with tax payer dollars since there is no "government money," since during his short tenure (seems like decades) that dependency rate has soared by 23%. He's the one whose desk the buck stops on when all is said and done. This subject is circular so follow along. Obama is a "wealth redistribution" type. That is a form of socialism whether you want to admit it or not.
Think of it like this. If our government continues to grow at the rate it has been growing since Obama took office, that figure sits at around 17%, and excessive regulations that intrude upon the ability of the free enterprise system to work at maximum efficiency continue to be created, how much wealth is going to be created by the private sector to feed the government so it can redistribute the wealth that is no longer being created?
We're already at a point where 50% of the work force is paying no, that's zero, income taxes every year to feed the federal money munching monster. So you take from the rich and give to poor excessively and you just created an untenable situation that won't have the ability to sustain itself. Look at the situation in Europe if you have any doubt about that
One Economic Theory But A Bad One
67 million Americans now rely on some form of federal government program. The Heritage Foundation just released its study about that dependency and that particular study lasted 10 years so don't fixate your thinking that this is just being caused by the temporary things in life like recessions, which come and go in all economic cycles, because for decades now the government has been instilling the mindset that if you can't do it for yourself then it will do it for you. That has to be by design and not by chance.
I liken this to the Carter administration and the data shows the likeness. Obama has increased the dependency rate just in the last two years the likes of which we haven't seen since The Peanut President was in office. Many of you youngsters don't remember Carter. I do because I lived, as an adult, through his continual crisis management, slap a band aid on it form of leadership or a better word is a "lack" of it.
Raising income taxes seems to be Obama's mindset but only on the wealthy. So lets look at percentages again to see what is what. In 1984 the percentage of Americans paying no income tax was 14.8 which amounted to 34.8 million tax returns. Fast forward to 2009 and the percentage has increased to 49.5. That's 151.7 million tax returns. So obviously there has been an upward trend where the wealthy have been asked increasingly to pay for more than their fair share, not less.
Off The Hook Now Huh Jimmie?
Here's what the big picture looks like regarding government dependency in the area areas of housing, college tuition, retirement assistance, food stamps, health care and on and on and on. 70% of the annual budget under this administration is spent on entitlement programs and 1 in every 5 Americans, an all time high, rely on the federal largess. That dependency jumped 8.1% just last year alone. So things are getting better in reverse are they Mr. President?
So lets look at government spending next. Those are our tax dollars at work so pay attention. In 2011 alone the federal government spent more tax dollars subsidizing its people than ever before in history. Here's an astonishing figure to look at. If you rely on Washington DC for its largess you can receive bennies valued @ $32,748. The nation's average disposable income sits @ $32,446. Do the math. If you don't want to work which is better? This is resulting in record high spending for the dependency programs.
A Stark Contrast
I'm a baby boomer and darned proud of it. We've supported the money muncher for decades by our sheer size. But guess what? During the next 25 years or so there will be 77 million of us retiring. Has the federal government exercised the foresight to handle that? No, it hasn't. That means we'll be drawing those social security checks that we have contributed money to for decades and we'll be drawing those Medicare benefits we have faithfully contributed into or maybe some of us will have to lean on Medicaid to supply our health care needs. Where did all that money we have put into the system go? Those little bennies are on the "unfunded liabilities" side of the ledger. So where is that money going to come from as the federal bureaucracy grows larger to manage things they have no business managing in the first place? Stark reality setting into your brain yet?
In closing, here's the National Debt Clock. Take a close look as I've used the version that doesn't make your head spin. Where's that money going to come from to repay what we don't have? The rich? There isn't enough money in those pockets to make a dent in what you see there. Just print more? Obviously you don't have a clue if you believe that. As the government grows so does the dependency rate. There is a direct correlation. Something to think about.
Look Ma! We Have No Money...

Are there solutions? Definitely there are. Tomorrow I will propose some viable, necessary solutions to the problems the federal government, with our assistance by continuing to elect professional pick pockets to office, has brought upon our heads.
Stay tuned.

You have hit a home run with this piece. We are moving towards European style socialism at an alarming rate. If only people would realize that the path leads to ruin. Just look at Greece to see our future. Up interesting, useful and awesome. By the way we were on the same wavelength this morning because I wrote about those false unemployment numbers.
It's all part of a much larger game plan Obama has. If he gets relected, we are toast unless there is a Democratic minority in the Senate and a majority remains in control of the House. We who are not dependent on government will become the minority who supports the government with our tax dollars.
Never thought I would be able to say that we have a President worse than Jimmy Carter, but yes we do!
Excellent work, We must continue to fight our way into the minds of naive liberals and open their eyes to the truth! voted up!
Good work Jim. Formula for success? Study everything California did/every move they made, and do the exact opposite.

The whole thing is genuinely scary. The combination of foreign workers in the US (legal and illegal), plus offshoring of US jobs, is eliminating the middle class. The ranks of the wealthy are few in number. We seem to be going through a phase where we mainly have the unemployed, the working poor, and the well paid government workers who make the rest of us poor. We also have gargantuan federal and private debt we can't pay off. We are simply imploding. I appreciate that the government can't fix much much of this, but they could implement policies that allow the private sector to do much of the fixing. Apart from federal fiscal austerity to reduce the official debt and abrogation of most of the off balance sheet liabilities, we need to expel foreign workers (legal and illegal) so millions of jobs open up for US citizens. We also need to end the plutocratic tariff policy that fails to impose retaliatory tariffs on low wage countries; our multinationals would be kicked out overnight and tens of millions of jobs would return home. Lower corporate tax rates, and less regulation, would also spur job creating domestic investment. The giant barrier is plutocracy - our big corporations (who will have to pay more for labor), and public employee labor unions (who will lose alot of federal worker union dues), will fight this agenda by curtailing campaign contributions. Sadly, our future, or maybe better put lack thereof, is for sale to the highest bidder.
I know much too well what these current governmental problems are, Jim. Now I look forward to the solutions you promise to offer.
Frog-excellent hub....makes you really think about things...I was just a kid when Carter was president but I still remember the way it was....I really don't like the "change " Obama has brought ....
Frog -- when Bummer promised "change" could we have misunderstood and he actually said "charge?" Like "charge" as to going into more debt and "charge" like attacking the American people and our way of life? Just a thought from a somewhat demented old lady -- thanks for an informative Hub. Voted up. Best/Sis
Very good article Frog Thank you...You broke it down into laymen’s terms. This election is a BIG DEAL! Even from someone like me, that is not that political savvy, I can see the US is going to sink or swim in the next few years. Thanks again,
Sunnie
Sir Frog, the numbers here are terrifying for they are true, and kind estimates at that. I would like to argue one point. You say the 77 million baby boomers will be retiring and the government has no plan to handle that in terms of the SSI payouts. I respectfully submit they do. It's called Obama-care by most of us. Let us not forget the panel and the criteria they will be using to decide if one is or not to get treatment... Age is one of the criteria along with another... contribution to society. Now we would all like to think in our rainbow colored world that they would never say anything like oh, well, he/she is too old now and therefore no longer contributing especially since they are now retired therefore no treatment or substandard treatment. But, do we really believe that? I don't. Neither does my mother, the retired nurse, baby boomer. That's how they are going to deal with it, in my opinion. They will just see them all die off.
Love the hub and I exercise my rights so I had to vote... UP!
It is a difficult thing to watch as socialism creeps in destroying prosperity, enslaving all Americans with debt It is intentional, you know!
It seems there are more people in the wagon than people pulling the wagon.
Great hub Frog and thanks for saying it in simple terms for me.....voted up
Frog - I am offended that you deleted my duplicate comment!!! Just kidding! Didn't realize I had posted it twice!
Others have said here what needed to be said--except (unless I missed it), that "WELCOME BACK, CARTER" poster is cool and then some...if you're old enough to "get" the reference.
Voted Up and More.
Between the government dependents, the uninformed, and uneducated, we could be on the losing end of this. It is almost a matter of time when the US sees days like those in Greece. The influence of the extreme left is everywhere--hollywood, education, and mainstream media. This serves to indoctrinate the younger generation. I'm not even sure how were going to combat this.
The only place where I see the battle being fought is at home. Conservative parents must teach their kids, that more government isn't the answer. Our founding fathers new that.
Excellent breakdown Frog. Been reading a new one on the early Roosevelt presidency. What a difference between the two in similar situations. At least R reduced his household expenses lol.
My Bad! I just now looked beyond the content to see that I could support the writer. Two thumbs up Froggy. Excellent post!
The left has good intent. Unfortunately their approach goes against this old saying (I think it goes something like this):
"Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day; teach him how to fish and he'll be set for life."
The current administration takes the former approach resulting in an ever growing population of government- dependent citizens.
One of the original intents of our founding fathers was to give everyone a government where their right to the pursuit of happiness is protected and encouraged. This basically means less government as well as less dependency on government.
Obama's policies and philosophy totally goes against this.

Being a lil baby boomer and working all my life; giving my fair share into the system and knowing their will be no benefits at retirement even though we were promised. Our gov'tment just keeps taking to give to the poor over and over again and the illegals. What is the answer in all of this? There are so many people still un-employed that have falling off the books and not accounted in any way shape or fashion (our old neighbors are perfect example). So does the gov'tment make unemployed look as if it is improving "why yes" false figures look good on paper only.
Excellent article, Jim.
Voted up as usual.
