Oh No! Not PBJ's Too?

Updated on November 23, 2013

Oh my it has finally come down to this. A school principal, Verenice Gutierrez, out on the left coast in Portland, Oregon has decreed that peanut, butter and jelly sandwiches, or reference to them, is racist. Unhand that PBJ sandwich kids and put your hands on the wall, feet spread wide apart.

I swear it's true. I can't make stuff like this up even with the imagination I have going for me. This happened just the other day out there in LalaLand at Harvey Scott K-8 school. Now if you're the parent of one of those students may I suggest you send the men in the little white coats that way with big butterfly nets to capture Verenice. She is a public menace and obviously has some racial issues herself.

I sure am glad I prefer peanut butter and banana sandwiches myself. I wouldn't want her to tag me that racist label I reckon. Actually wouldn't care if the moron did.

Hold The Jelly Banana Man!

Good Lord look over the horizon and here comes the PBJ police! Now Verenice's logic about this just plum escapes me you see. Her reasoning is that people in some cultures don't eat sandwich bread. Really? Who would have known? Think of the variations Verenice. PBJ Pita? Sounds like that might work. Or PBJ tortas? Wow the possibilities seem unlimited. Personally I think Verenice is a nut job myself.

Now she expounded on this theory to the local Portland Tribune news rag.

  • “Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year,” the Tribune said.
  • “What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?” Gutierrez asked. “Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”

Oh yes, this goes more over the top. According to the Trib the school started out the year with “intensive staff trainings, frequent staff meetings, classroom observations and other initiatives,” to help educators understand their own “white privilege.” I call it white guilt training which is preposterous. The school system desires that teachers change their teaching methods so that minority student's performances are given the old boosterroo. Political correctness gone completely awry. I assume that only white teachers partook in this intensive training?

Oh Verenice went on proudly to tell her staff that “our focus school and our Superintendent’s mandate that we improve education for students of color, particularly Black and Brown boys, will provide us with many opportunities to use the protocols of Courageous Conversations in data teams, team meetings, staff meetings, and conversations amongst one another.” I can only say if I desired to have an intelligent conversation it wouldn't include Verenice Gutierrez.

I take offense at Gutierrez's reference to "Black and Brown boys" myself. I'll need to check my Guide To Political Correctness to see how that shakes out in the real world. "Brown boys?" Really? Don't people of a black skin pigment prefer African-American?

So where do we stand on this issue now. Imagine yourself in the grocery store on the bread aisle. Don't run amok knocking the stuffing out of loaves of sandwich bread. Control yourself! before you throw that loaf of bread into your cart please think about it. Lets follow the liberal educator mode and be more sensitive in our choices of products. Consider pitas, tortas or maybe even various flat breads. Be culturally diverse and not racist when choosing the bread to make your PBJ with.

Goodness the racist possibilities are running rampant now. Is white bread more racist than the 12 grain I like so much? And what about, In Verenice's words to the Tribune: “What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?” You telling us we are forcing anyone to eat PBJ sandwiches Verenice? Or do you prefer that we eat what the Somali's and Hispanics eat instead of what our own palates prefer?
